Victor Froholdt: The Prince of Copenhagen
Introduction
Copenhagen. The most visited city in Scandinavia. Roughly 4 million tourists a year sip coffee in canal-side cafes, pose with the Little Mermaid, or wander the grounds of Renaissance-era Rosenborg Castle here. But don’t be fooled by the postcard attractions. Under the surface, football runs deep in the Danish capital’s ice-cold veins.
In the neighborhood of Østerbro, tucked between cobbled streets and the choppy Øresund strait, lies Parken Stadium. More than just a football ground, Parken is a proving ground. A place where talent is discovered, refined, and eventually, exported. FC Copenhagen does more than just win Superliga titles. They make players. Real ones. Hungry, no-nonsense players sharpened by the frigid winds of the Baltics.
Óskarsson, Haraldsson, Daramy, Kristiansen, Højlund, Wind, Jelert, they all once passed through here. Now, they’re writing their stories abroad. And this summer, another academy product looks set to join them, ready to carve out his own place.
Biography
Victor Froholdt was born on February 25th, 2006 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Froholdt initially played for Vallensbæk IF before joining the FC Copenhagen academy at the age of 12. After working his way up through the youth ranks, he was rewarded with his senior debut in the Danish Cup against IF Lysing on September 27th, 2023. He was subbed on in the 57th minute, scoring in the 90th, as Copenhagen cruised through 9-0.
He would make his Superliga debut in November of 2023 against Randers FC, again scoring off the bench. He finished his debut season with 8 appearances, and was officially promoted to the first team ahead of the 24/25 season. With the trust of FCK manager Jacob Neestrup, Froholdt has flourished in his first full professional season, netting six goals and providing five assists.

*Disclaimer*
Froholdt has occasionally played as a winger this season, though as his long term future is as a CM, that’s how I will be evaluating him.
Tactical / Playstyle
Froholdt is a natural midfielder, who best operates as a two-way player, active in both offensive and defensive scenarios. His heatmap (depicted below) is slightly skewed by his occasional appearances as a winger, however he is indeed most active in the halfspaces.
He is exceptional on the half-turn, and is especially effective when allowed to make direct, marauding runs into space. He often opts to progress the ball this way rather than with passing. It’s for this reason Froholdt is typically played in a double pivot, usually paired with a more effective passer, such as Lukas Lerager or Thomas Delaney.
Froholdt also excels at ball-winning, duels, and interceptions, lending him, at least on the surface, the ability to play as a lone DM at the base of the midfield. Whether he is molded into this kind of player depends on the systemic needs of his next club.
Technical
Possession: Froholdt produces 36.3 passes per 90 with an 87.9% pass completion rate. These numbers are fairly average for a central midfielder, indicating he is not currently the beating heart of his team’s build-up. He typically plays safer, high-percentage passes, which makes him a sound option in possession.
Froholdt often drops deep into his own half to connect play. His short passing is assured and ambidextrous, and he shows high press-resistance and composure when under pressure, using his body effectively to hold off opponents.
Creativity: Froholdt is not the most creative of midfielders. As illustrated, his progressive passes per 90 figure (3.6) sits below average for U20 midfielders worldwide. Instead of progressing play with a long ball, he prefers to drive play forwards with his dribbling.
His average pass distance of 14.8 meters is also well below the median for midfielders in his age bracket, reinforcing the results of the eye test: Lacking range and inventiveness as a passer. There are flashes of potential here, mainly in creative touches such as scoops and flick-ons, but most of his long passes lack zip or drive, often floating rather than effectively breaking lines.
Dribbling: Statistically speaking, Froholdt is an exceptionally strong ball carrier, ranking among the best in Europe in his age group. He often picks up the ball deep in his own half and purposefully drives play forwards.
Not only is he effective when dribbling, but he looks to dribble frequently, sitting in the 96th percentile of U20 midfielders worldwide. His dribbling style is more reliant on power rather than technical finesse, reminiscent of Dejan Kulusevski in the way he shrugs off contact and keeps surging forward.
Crossing: In terms of Froholdt’s crossing, the raw numbers appear to show a slightly above average crossing volume, paired with a slightly above average cross accuracy percentage, however the eye test suggests these figures are slightly misleading, inflated by his time playing on the wing.
When operating in his natural position as a central midfielder, Froholdt often drifts wide near the byline, which does create crossing opportunities. That said, Froholdt usually opts to dribble infield instead before laying the ball off to a more natural crosser, often Elias Achouri or Mohamed Elyounoussi.
When he does choose to cross, he tends not to scan beforehand, hitting balls into the area without a clear target in mind. To his credit, his crosses do tend to land in dangerous areas, but there’s no guarantee they’ll connect with a teammate.
Goal Threat: In front of goal, Froholdt consistently overperforms his npxG, a strong indicator of solid finishing ability. His shots-on-target percentage of 47% supports that conclusion, sitting comfortably above the positional average for the U20s.
He has a good instinct for dangerous spaces, often drifting towards the edge of the box and crashing in late to meet crosses. In the box he finds vacant positions, near post, far post, and anywhere in between where vulnerability is evident.
His shot placement is not pinpoint accurate, and he tends to shoot with more power than precision. Still, this approach proves effective, especially when shooting from the top of the box.
Heading: Froholdt’s aerial numbers are rather underwhelming, especially for a player of his size and physical profile. He contests a fair number of aerial duels, but his success rate sits at a meager 34%, not an atrocious output by any means, but certainly below expectations.
As fearless a player he is in other phases of play, Froholdt appears reluctant to fully commit in aerial challenges. At times it seems he only jumps out of obligation rather than an actual desire to win the ball.
Froholdt’s heading certainly has room to improve, and with the proper mindset switch, he could turn into a significant aerial presence in the midfield (Think Lucas Bergvall or Aurélien Tchouaméni).
Defending: Froholdt is an impressively solid defender. His pace allows him to keep up with quicker attackers, and his strength enables him to consistently challenge and win the ball. He is especially strong in shoulder to shoulder contact scenarios, where his physicality often gives him the edge.
He’s a combative presence, unafraid of 50/50s or physical contests. Froholdt currently leads all Superliga midfielders in defensive duels won %, and ranks 3rd in defensive duels won. He also stands out for his anticipation and ability to make well-timed interceptions.
Verdict
Current Ability: 6.5/10 Victor Froholdt is currently playing at a strong level for the Danish Superliga, and is an important player for FC Copenhagen. Should he make a move abroad this summer, his role will likely be that of a rotation or depth option initially, rather than an immediate starter.
Potential Ability: 9/10 At the high end of his potential, Froholdt could develop into one of the best ball-carrying midfielders in Europe. At that level, he projects as a star player for an upper mid-table side in a top-5 league (e.g. Eintracht Frankfurt, Aston Villa, Atalanta), or a reliable starter for a Champions League level club (e.g. Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Inter Milan).
Summary
Victor Froholdt is a physically imposing, combative midfielder with clear strengths in ball carrying and defensive contribution. While his creativity and aerial presence remain areas for improvement, his reliability in possession and ability to drive play forward make him a valuable asset in transitional phases of play.
Currently an impressive performer at the Danish Superliga level, Froholdt’s ceiling can be reached by developing a more assertive mindset in aerial duels and expanding his creative passing range. With continued growth, he has all the tools to become a dominant ball-carrying midfielder at a high European level, capable of contributing as a key player for top-tier clubs.
